In 2008, East Carolina University’s Army ROTC “Pirate Battalion” organized and hosted the first ever “Wounded Warrior Run” to benefit Fort Bragg’s Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) and Soldier & Family Assistance Center (SFAC). The race was an overwhelming success as over 100 local runners and several local sponsors joined the Pirate Battalion in showing their love and support for our Nation’s Wounded Warriors. East Carolina University and the Pirate Club honored several Soldiers of the WTU and family members the following weekend at a pre-game tailgate for the Marshall football game and the Pirate Battalion presented a check for $3,500 to the Soldier & Family Assistance Center on the field at half-time.
We repeated our efforts in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and were again bowled over by the support of local sponsors which helped us continue to build our race. After moving our race to a new 5-mile course at the scenic Brook Valley Country Club golf course in 2009, we grew to 300 registered runners for our 2010 race. In 2010, we relabeled our race the “Patriot Run” to reflect a change in our charity to Ft. Bragg’s Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) which advocates on behalf of and supports all Families who have suffered the loss of a serviceman/woman in combat.
As a result of all of our incredible sponsors’ support and continued faith in our efforts, we have been able to donate over $30,000 to support Wounded Warriors and their families.
All proceeds this year will be split between Ft. Bragg’s Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) and ECU Alumni 1LT Nathan Rimpf Support Fund.

The SOS services parents, spouses, and children in the state of North Carolina. The Survivor Outreach Services mission is to educate the community about the SOS Program and advocate on behalf of all Families who have suffered the loss of a Soldier. The program strives to build a unified support program which embraces and reassures Survivors that they are continually linked to the Army Family for as long as they desire. We provide an avenue of resources to include support groups, bi-monthly newsletters, information briefs, and social activities.
We are partnering with the folks at Finish Strong this year for our timing/scoring and online registration.
